Why do we need Social Emotional Learning in educational institutions?

We believe that the education system is the foundational path to bringing about change in the world we live in today. For hundreds of years, education has been defined by intellectual growth, which is essential but constrictive as it does not prepare students for challenges in the world outside. Education should encompass not only intellectual learning that is supported by  formal systems, but also social and emotional growth. At The SEL Lab, we envision  a world where Social-Emotional Learning is integrated and adopted within every formal educational curriculum so that every student has the opportunity to develop their emotional intelligence without having to rely on external, experiential factors alone.

We believe that Social-Emotional Learning is essential in creating global citizens in the complex, challenging, and transforming world we inhabit today.

SEE Learning® Educator Workshop

SEE Learning (Social, Emotional, and Ethical Learning) is a K-12 education program created by the Center for Contemplative Sciences & Compassion-Based Ethics at Emory University to provide educators with tools to foster emotional, social, and ethical intelligence in students. SEE Learning was created by a collaborative international team of curriculum writers, teachers, and experts in education, developmental psychology and neuroscience. The program expands on the field of social-emotional learning (SEL) by drawing from new developments in educational practice and scientific research. Key additional components, include:

  • Attention and Awareness Training
  • Compassion for Self and Others
  • Trauma and Resilience-informed Care
  • Systems Thinking
  • Ethical Discernment

SEE Learning provides educators with a comprehensive framework and engaging curriculum. The program motivates students to engage ethically and compassionately as a member of the global community.

Dalai Lama on the SEE Learning Program®

All religions advocate compassion, but to involve the whole of humanity we need an ethical approach with universal appeal: a secular ethics that nurtures such basic human values as empathy, tolerance, forgiveness and love. Recent research has shown that such values can be cultivated through learning and practice on the basis of common sense, experience and scientific findings. They can be integrated in heart and mind not through the enforcement of rules, but through the voluntary application of reason and investigation. I am pleased that Emory University and its Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics have adopted this approach in their Social, Emotional, and Ethical Learning (SEE Learning) program. Its focus is on educating the whole child.” – An excerpt written by The Dalai Lama, on SEE Learning (2019)
