Who we are

The SEL Lab is a social enterprise passionate about sharing Social Emotional Learning curricula from across the world to individuals, institutions and communities. Our global team of facilitators and trainers have years of training and experience in the field of social and emotional education.

Our community initiative ‘Cross Border Classrooms’ has had the support of many senior global trainers from across the world deeply involved in training thousands of people in South Asia and Africa with the primary goal of facilitating peace across borders using social and emotional education.

Our Impact

We have an international team of senior facilitators trained in globally recognized curricula. We have been the first to bring the Community Resiliency Model® and the Emotional CPR community programs to the South Asian region. Our flagship community initiative- Cross Border Classrooms promotes peace through dialogue between countries under conflict. We are proud to have established a presence in over 40+ countries. Our work is concentrated in the South Asian region and we have a presence in the African region through our affiliates.

Anokhi Parikh, PhD
Director & Founder

Anokhi founded The SEL Lab in 2020 with the goal of making Social Emotional Education accessible. For the 15 years, Anokhi’s work has been focused on promoting non-violence and finding peaceful solutions to socio-political realities of the world through social emotional learning. She is India’s first certified teacher for the Community Resiliency Model® by the Trauma Resource Institute, California, US and Emotional CPR, Atlanta US. She has also been trained in Compassionate Integrity Training by the Center of Compassion, Integrity and Secular Ethics, Life University, Atlanta, Georgia, US. She is a Certified Peace Educator from the Global Peace Institute, UK and has also completed two levels of Trauma informed leadership trainings with Thomas Hubl. As of 2022, she is also certified as a SEE Learning® facilitator by the Emory University.

 

She has spent 10 years of her career working in Kashmir and Manipur and has to date she has worked across 40+ different countries across the world. 

She represented India as a global changemaker at the Peace One Day and taught the world’s largest global lesson in SEL on World Peace Day in 2020. Currently, she is focusing her work in the South Asian region.

She has previously been the Director of The Foundation for six years and worked with UNESCO MGIEP as an individual consultant for their Prevention of Violent Extremism program for two years. She is currently also the Director of Social Emotional Intelligence at Walking Tree Ventures. She is a mom to a young daughter and lives in Mumbai with her family.

She has a PhD in Economics and MSc in Finance from Manchester Business School. She is a mom to a young daughter and lives in Mumbai with her family.

Anum Mulla

Lead facilitator

Anum is the Global Youth Strategist for the Charter for Compassion, an empathy & compassion cultivation facilitator, and writer. 

With roots in India, Pakistan, the Middle East, and Canada, she is passionate about the fluid interrelation of cultures and perspectives and is a strong advocate of social justice and reform. Her work is rooted in the belief of a metaphysical alignment of the core human values of empathy and compassion. 

Anum serves on the Board of Trustees for the Charter for Compassion through which she focuses on engaging youth in compassionate actions. She is a Co-Creator and facilitator of the Empathy & Resiliency Methods Training Program, a Level II Facilitator of the Compassionate Integrity Training Program (Center for Compassion Integrity & Secular Ethics), a Social Emotional & Ethical Learning Facilitator (Emory University), and a Crossing Borders Education Facilitator. 

Along with her team, Anum spearheaded the CIT for Educators in South Asia, CIT for Educators in Africa, and CIT for Young Changemakers programs, as well as the CIT Facilitator Training for Educators in Africa, and for UNESCO MGIEP, she continues to facilitate compassion based education trainings across the globe.

Anum attended The American International School of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and graduated from The British School, New Delhi, India, she studied political science and history at the University of Toronto, Canada, and now resides in New Delhi, India.

Shane O'Connor

Lead facilitator

Shane is an Adjunct Professor and faculty member of the Center for Health, Well-being at IE University, Spain. Shane joined the team in 2022. 

 

Shane has worked internationally as a facilitator, trainer, and educator in a wide range of areas from Health and Well-Being, Peace and Global Education, Youth Work for professionals to Teacher training workshops. He is a Co-Creator and facilitator of the Empathy & Resiliency Methods Training Program. He has over two decades of experience working for local peace and human rights organisations, as well as larger International NGOs and educational institutions in the Global North and South. Over the past number of years, Shane has developed & led the CIT (Compassionate Integrity Training) Global Education Network. He has also nurtured CITs strategic partnership with UNESCO/MGIEP. Shane joined the Charter for Compassion Team as Education Lead in 2022 to continue co-creating and expanding compassion throughout the education community around the world.

Shane is originally from Dublin, Ireland but moved to Madrid 6 years ago with his wife and two young daughters.

As well as facilitating in several different areas of Health, Well-Being and Happiness, Shane is also an Advanced Breathwork Instructor, Yoga Instructor, Wild Fitness Instructor, and qualified Personal Trainer. He loves everything to do with using nature as an educator and exploring ancestral indigenous wisdom and is Co-Founder of Indigenous Ireland.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism, OCN Qualifications in Youth Work and Post Graduate Certificates in Development Education and Mediation from DCU and UCD.

Ashyia Akhtar

Lead facilitator

Ashiya has studied Biomedical Science at University and completed a masters in Bioethics and Medical Law.

She is a qualified Primary School Teacher and teaches children from ages 7-11 years old. She is also a Trauma Perceptive Practice Trainer and Community Resiliency Model (CRM) Facilitator.
Ashyia is a passionate advocate of Compassionate Integrity Training and began her CIT journey with a course for educators in Spring 2020, the training resonated with her so much, spurring her onto become a facilitator, and learning more about helping communities in particular those who have suffered adversity and want to build resilience and spread compassion.
She implemented SEE (Social, Emotional & Ethical) Learning at her school and considers Social, Emotional Learning a cornerstone and educational right for every child.

She is involved in co-facilitating and bringing trauma informed practice to as many people as possible. Ashyia is a mum of 2 boys and lives with her family in London, England (UK).
